Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the sounds of bells and drums in a temple serve as a medium to lead the mind from the gross to the subtle. The mind is naturally attracted to loud or striking sounds; when it attaches to the resonance of a temple bell, it follows the sound as it fades into silence, thereby becoming subtle and quiet itself. He clarifies that silence is not merely the absence of sound or the opposite of noise; rather, silence is an ever-present reality that exists regardless of whether words are present or absent. Just as the present moment exists behind the thoughts of past and future, silence is the constant background that allows sound to be heard. A true temple is defined as a place where words, forms, and actions lead one toward silence, the formless, and the dissolution of the ego. The speaker emphasizes that while the entire earth is a place of worship in a higher spiritual sense, a seeker must initially find a specific 'temple' or sacred space that helps quiet the mind. Eventually, one reaches a state where even the noise of a marketplace reminds them of silence. He notes that joy and love should be the source of one's actions rather than a result of them. When work arises out of inner love, the distinction between 'big' or 'small' tasks disappears, as the action becomes an expression of the soul's dance. He warns against using the idea of 'everything is sacred' as an excuse to avoid spiritual discipline, noting that until the mind itself becomes a temple, one must be careful in choosing their environment.
