Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a young man's dilemma about leaving his conflict-ridden home, which his mother calls escapism. The speaker advises that the first attempt should always be to improve the situation where one is. Escapism should never be the first option. One must make a sincere and complete effort to explain things to their family and take them along. However, one should continue these efforts only until a point where either a positive change is visible, or it becomes clear that while others are not improving, one's own consciousness is degrading. That is the point to decide to leave. The speaker clarifies that leaving a place where one's consciousness is deteriorating is not escapism but discretion (Vivek). He refutes the argument that one must remain in their designated "battlefield" (karmabhoomi) under all circumstances. A spiritual person is a warrior, but they wisely choose the right battles and do not waste their energy on futile ones. To run away from a situation that causes the downfall of one's consciousness is auspicious. Being a deserter means leaving a place where one's consciousness could have been elevated; leaving the wrong place is an act of wisdom. Furthermore, leaving is not the final step. One should go out, gather strength, help others, and become more refined. After some time, one can return with this newfound strength to try again. The family has the first right to one's love and efforts, but not the last. If the attempts at home are unsuccessful, there are many other deserving people in the world who are waiting for help. The primary duty is towards one's own consciousness and its fulfillment. Your first responsibility is related to your fundamental identity, which is that of a thirsty consciousness. Therefore, your primary duty is to quench the thirst of your consciousness.
