Description

Acharya Prashant narrates a story originally told by Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa about a tiger cub raised among goats. Having lived with goats since birth, the cub adopted their habits, eating grass and bleating like them. One day, an older tiger encountered this cub and was shocked by its behavior. The older tiger forced the cub to see its reflection in a pond and taste meat, eventually making the cub realize its true nature as a tiger. Acharya Prashant explains that this story illustrates the profound impact of company. Just as the cub's health and identity suffered by living against its nature, humans suffer when they keep company that is contrary to their true self, which is the soul. He emphasizes that the soul is naturally peaceful, pure, and free from disease, and associating with those who are restless or impure leads to misery. Acharya Prashant asserts that one must seek the company of those who reflect the qualities of the soul—those who are desireless and without distortions. When questioned about the difficulty of finding such people in one's current environment, he challenges the listener to ask why they remain in such a place. He compares staying in bad company to a thirsty person staying in a desert; if one is truly seeking truth, they must leave the 'sand' and find the 'water.' He warns against forming bonds based on shared weaknesses or vices, noting that such relationships often collapse if one person decides to improve. He provides a practical criterion for evaluating relationships: if becoming more peaceful, selfless, and aware deepens a relationship, that relationship is worth honoring. However, if spiritual growth causes a relationship to break, one should let it go.
