Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the sense of identification with the body is a false construct, primarily limited to the face rather than the entire physical form. He points out that if a person were to see a photograph of their own internal organs or even less-viewed body parts like the back or genitals with their name attached, they would feel a sense of detachment or even offense. This reaction proves that we do not truly identify with the body as a whole, but only with a small, superficial portion of it. Most of our knowledge about the body is limited to the skin, while the complex internal systems operate entirely without our conscious control or awareness. He further argues that the body functions independently of our will, often surprising us with ailments or sensations that we do not choose. If we were truly the body, we would not need to consult medical experts or specialists to understand what is happening within us. Acharya Prashant compares the relationship between the self and the body to a piece of clothing getting accidentally snagged on a thorny bush; they are two distinct entities that have become unnecessarily entangled. He notes that during moments of deep concentration or total immersion in an activity, the body-consciousness disappears, and one must rely on memory to re-identify with their reflection in a mirror, proving that the 'I' is separate from the physical form.
