Description

Acharya Prashant explains that when consciousness wants to improve, it moves towards change. This change can take two forms. If consciousness is in an unconscious state, it seeks 'growth' (vriddhi), which means expansion and accumulation of more things. Most people, when they talk about progress, are referring to this material growth—more furniture, money, prestige, and possessions. This is the progress of an unconscious mind, where betterment is equated with accumulating more worldly objects. The second path to betterment is 'development' (vikas). While growth asks to accumulate more, development questions the purpose of accumulation, seeking the ultimate goal beyond material possessions. Although the word 'development' is often used in society and politics, the underlying intention is usually 'growth'. The speaker highlights two fundamental problems with the growth model. Spiritually, accumulating things is not an end in itself and does not lead to liberation. Materially, the Earth's resources are finite, while the desire for growth is infinite, leading to environmental destruction. The current economic model, measured by GDP, only reflects this destructive growth, not true development. True development is qualitative and internal, focusing on the evolution of human consciousness towards liberation. A development-oriented economy would value things based on their contribution to human well-being, such as compassion, joy, and harmony. The speaker asserts that the progress of a nation should be measured by the inner state of its people, not just material accumulation. A truly developed society would prioritize education (both worldly and self-knowledge) and health, ensuring no one is poor, rather than being obsessed with making everyone rich. The ultimate aim of any policy or economy should be to lead human beings towards liberation.
