Description

Acharya Prashant explains that meat-eating is neither good nor bad from a biological perspective, as human ancestors were carnivores and the human body is still capable of digesting meat. However, the core issue is not the act of eating meat itself, but the violence inherent in the mind that kills. He emphasizes that violence is primarily a state of mind that harms the individual practicing it before it harms anyone else. A mind that believes in killing is fundamentally violent toward itself, leading to a life devoid of peace and joy. He argues that violence manifests in various forms beyond killing animals, such as greed for wealth, pursuit of status, and conflicts in the name of religion or nationality. Even exploitation of animals for milk or destroying forests constitutes violence. Acharya Prashant points out that a person violent toward an animal cannot be truly loving toward their own child; that violence will simply take a different form, such as forcing the child into harsh competition. He suggests that one should choose vegetarianism not just for health reasons, but to cultivate a mind free from the quality of violence. Addressing common counter-arguments, he explains that eating fruits can be a non-violent or even cooperative act, as plants use fruits to attract animals for seed dispersal. While eating plants involves some level of violence, one must begin by renouncing the most gross and obvious forms of violence, like killing animals, before addressing subtler forms. He dismisses arguments about killing mosquitoes or plants as excuses used by a violent mind to justify its actions. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of the mind to achieve peace and liberation from all forms of self-harming violence.
