Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of the greatest threat to Sanatan Dharma, also known as Hinduism. He explains that practically, the foundation of any religion lies in its scriptures. Ideally, the foundation of Dharma is the Self (Atma), meaning to live according to the Self and move towards it. However, this is an ideal situation because the mind is often astray and distant from the Self, which is Truth and peace. If the mind already knew the Self, it wouldn't need Dharma. Therefore, Dharma is necessary to guide the mind towards the Self, and this is why scriptures are at the center of religion. These scriptures explain how to live, the nature of life, the truth of the individual being (Jiva), and the essence of thoughts, feelings, and relationships. The greatest threat to any religion, including Sanatan Dharma, arises when its followers lose respect for, inclination towards, and knowledge of their own scriptures. The current situation is dire because the average Hindu has no connection with the central books of their own religion. The speaker notes that when he discusses the Upanishads, people often ask what they are and where they can be purchased, highlighting a profound ignorance. For many, being a Hindu is merely a matter of birthright or celebrating festivals like Holi and Diwali, without understanding the underlying philosophy or vision of their faith. This lack of knowledge makes the religion hollow and prevents it from enduring. A dangerous notion is spreading that these profound scriptures are unimportant. This is exacerbated by modern professional gurus who discourage reading the scriptures, telling followers to just listen to them instead. The speaker suggests this is because if people read the scriptures, the gurus' falsehoods would be exposed, and their businesses would collapse. He also points out the grave mistake of equating Dharma with culture. Culture is time-bound and changes, whereas Dharma, as Truth, is timeless. Reducing Dharma to culture is to degrade it. The speaker concludes that the biggest threat to Sanatan Dharma is this internal neglect and disrespect for its foundational scriptures, often propagated by the very people who claim to be its guardians.
