Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the descriptions of supernatural powers or Siddhis in the Vibhuti Pada of Patanjali Yoga Sutras are symbolic and subtle rather than literal or physical. He asserts that misunderstandings occur when people, who are deeply rooted in body-consciousness, apply gross physical meanings to spiritual statements. Since most individuals identify themselves solely as the body, they interpret concepts like flying in the sky or becoming invisible as physical feats. However, Yoga is a process for the mind to unite with the Truth, not for the physical body, which is destined to perish. He clarifies that flying in the sky symbolizes the mind moving or dwelling within the Self or Atman, as the sky is a traditional Vedantic symbol for the Soul. Similarly, becoming invisible signifies a state where the seeker no longer perceives the body as an object of attachment or interest; it effectively disappears from their spiritual vision. The knowledge of all worlds refers to the realization that no external realm or worldly achievement can provide the ultimate peace the mind seeks. This knowledge liberates the mind from the ignorance of wandering in search of fulfillment. Acharya Prashant emphasizes that these Siddhis are not aids to Samadhi but can actually become obstacles. They are signs of progress, but stopping to indulge in them prevents one from reaching the final goal. He points out that true saints like Kabir Saheb and Ravidas lived simple, ordinary lives without performing miracles. He concludes that the greatest miracles are the existence of the ego and its eventual dissolution in Samadhi. He warns seekers to be cautious of those who display supernatural powers, as true spirituality lies in simplicity and the transcendence of the ego.
