Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about why he opposes the ways of the current generation, which considers itself bold in its choice of clothing and language. He begins by questioning this definition of boldness, asking if taking off clothes or using abusive language truly constitutes being bold. He defines boldness as being fearless (nirbhay), courageous (himmatwar), and dauntless (nidar). He explains that fear is an innate quality we are born with, a fear that constantly tells us to do whatever our body and society dictate. The body's commands are to eat, drink, rest, and have sex, while society dictates how to speak, what education to get, where to travel, and what clothes to wear. The fear within us tells us not to go against the body or society. Based on this, he redefines boldness. True boldness is not blindly doing what the body wants or what the world is doing. Instead, boldness is the ability to oppose one's own inner tendencies (vrittis). It is the courage to stand against the useless trends and pressures of society. He points out the irony that most people perform actions out of fear—fear of not fitting in—and then label it as boldness, thereby deceiving themselves. He asserts that the current generation is the most fear-ridden in history, a fact supported by the rise in mental health issues like anxiety and depression. He argues that calling fear-driven actions 'boldness' is a self-deceptive conspiracy. To illustrate his point, he contrasts the so-called boldness of models wearing bikinis with the nudity of Mahavir. He argues that if nudity is the measure of boldness, then animals, who wear no clothes, would be the boldest. He says that models who claim to be bold are actually fearful, taking numerous photos to publish just one perfect shot, worried about their appearance. Mahavir, whom he calls 'Maha-bold' (greatly bold), fought against his own tendencies. He too gave up all clothes, but not for an Instagram photo. The speaker concludes that there is a world of difference between the two kinds of nudity. True boldness is to understand life and have the courage to do what is right and refuse what is false, regardless of the consequences or punishment.
