Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of how to love oneself when one is aware of their inner filth and impurities. He explains that there are two paths. The first is the path of self-love. This path involves loving the purity that is hidden amidst all the filth. Even if there is a lot of filth on the surface, one must recognize the purity within and love that purity. By loving and nurturing this inner purity, one will help it grow. This path of love does not focus on the filth. It is about understanding what is truly desirable in life and choosing to stay with that, not even looking towards the filth. The result of this focus is that one eventually transcends the filth. The lover believes that the beautiful thing they love will itself take care of the garbage. The second path is that of self-renunciation. If one knows they have many impurities and therefore cannot love themselves, then they should not. Instead, they should renounce themselves. Since a person is a mix of both filth and purity, if one's attention is constantly drawn to the inner garbage, defects, and impurities, then the path of self-renunciation is better than self-love. This involves renouncing the internal garbage that is causing distress. This is the path of the wise, the path of 'Neti-Neti' (not this, not this), where one resolves to leave, cut, and erase the impurities. Ultimately, these are the only two paths available: the path of love and the path of renunciation.
