Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question regarding Kabir Saheb's verses on nature and the possibility of change. He clarifies that while Kabir Saheb speaks of the difficulty of changing one's innate nature, it is not impossible; otherwise, the instruction to renounce negative qualities like 'Tamas' would be meaningless. The necessity of seeking a Guru arises precisely because this transformation is arduous. He further distinguishes between happiness and bliss, explaining that happiness is conditional, dependent on external events, objects, or thoughts, and is inherently linked to suffering. Happiness is a demand or a desire for fulfillment, whereas bliss is the freedom from the very demand to be happy. Bliss is unconditional and constant because it does not rely on external circumstances. Acharya Prashant elaborates that happiness and suffering are two sides of the same coin; the deeper the suffering, the more intense the subsequent happiness. He notes that even those who appear continuously miserable often find a hidden egoistic pleasure in their suffering, using it to gain sympathy or to feel morally superior to others. This attachment to suffering is another form of seeking pleasure through the ego. True bliss, or 'Anand', is the state of equanimity where one remains unaffected by the cycles of joy and sorrow, honor and insult, or gain and loss. Spirituality is described as the art of maintaining this internal sameness regardless of changing external conditions, recognizing that external events cannot truly add to or subtract from the core self.
