Description

Acharya Prashant questions the value of earning in a way where one's mind does not want to settle. He states that with such work, the stomach will keep getting filled, but the mind will keep burning. The stomach will swell, but the mind will turn to ash. He asks if this is the way to live. The speaker explains that one should not look at employment or a source of income by first starting to earn and then, based on the earnings, finding one's interests and love. He asserts that the process is the other way around. First, one must find what activity brings peace. One should discover what gives light to their mind and satisfies it. Then, one should find a way to earn money from such work. He gives an example: if you enjoy flying kites, then find a way to make a living from it. This work should be something that drenches you completely, something you can do by immersing yourself in it. The speaker defines 'karma' (action) as movement—the movement of the mind and the body. The sole purpose of movement is to reach non-movement, to reach peace. Therefore, the work should be of the mind. After identifying such work, one should apply creativity to figure out how to earn some money while doing it. The money is an additional benefit, not the primary goal. The fundamental thing to be gained from work is peace. First, it must be seen that the work provides peace. Once this is clear, one can ask how to earn money from it. The speaker assures that if you can do any work with excellence, you will find a way to earn an income from it. You may not become a billionaire, but you will earn enough to live happily without worrying about sustenance. He proposes a thought experiment: if you had no greed, no social or family responsibilities, and were given money and prestige, what work would you want to do? The work you would choose then, not out of greed or fear but because your heart desires it, is your real work. There are countless such missions in the world that require participation. For instance, removing the burden of plastic from the Himalayas is a spiritual act and a service to Truth. There are thousands of such paths, and they may not even appear spiritual on the surface.
