Description

Acharya Prashant explains that carelessness is not a matter of principles or formulas, nor is it a decision that can be made after seeking advice. One does not become careless by asking five people. A person who becomes truly careless no longer cares for the advice of others, including the speaker's. The very act of asking about carelessness shows that one is deeply concerned. When carelessness prevails, one would not care for the speaker's advice either. Instead, one might say, "The Guru may say that carelessness is not right, but we have become careless even towards the Guru." Carelessness is a very personal matter, belonging to the Self (Atma). The mind, which is an embodiment of cares and worries, cannot be careless. The mind becomes careless only when it rests in the Self, when it ceases to be the mind. This is contrasted with the common human tendency to seek advice for every life decision, such as marriage proposals or school admissions, which demonstrates a state of being full of care. Carelessness is a state of fun and ecstasy that arises when one says, "I don't want anything from anyone." The moment greed is gone, you become careless. As long as there is greed in your mind, you are a beggar before others and cannot be careless. The speaker quotes Kabir Saheb: "When desire is gone, worry is gone, the mind is careless. Those who want nothing are the kings of kings." You still want a lot, and those who want a lot get worry first, and what they want comes later. When you want nothing, you become careless. This might seem like a high price, as if everything is being taken away. However, what is being taken away are your chains, diseases, anxieties, and worries. It is a blessing to have them taken away. One should see the futility of what one is holding onto. We are afflicted by attachment, habit, and the fear of society. The man of God tests life on this touchstone: whenever something is about to leave him, he says, "It was fake, that's why it's leaving. Get lost." If something is leaving, it is only because it is worthy of being let go. What is real will never ask for your leave. This is carelessness. The most ridiculous image in the world is the face of a worried, anxious, and serious person. It is a joke because you are worried about the loss of things whose disappearance would be a blessing, like being worried that your debt might end or your illness might be cured. All our worries are like this. Since the Truth cannot be thought of, whatever you are worried about is not the Truth. Let it go. This is carelessness.
