Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question about reincarnation. He states that while reincarnation is a reality, it is crucial to ask whose reincarnation it is. He clarifies that there is no personal self that can be reincarnated. The individual self, which is associated with a single body, perishes when the body does. Reincarnation, he explains, is the manifestation of latent consciousness present in every fiber and atom of matter. This consciousness is not something that comes from outside; for instance, life emerges in the soil, and consciousness appears in a fetus in the womb, not because something external entered, but because it was already latently present in the matter itself. He further elaborates that consciousness is inherent in matter, just as a tree is latent in a seed or fire in a flint stone. Under favorable conditions, this potential manifests. Shri Krishna, in the Gita, explains that what we call inert (Jad) and conscious (Chetan) are both aspects of nature (Prakriti)—one is Apara Prakriti (lower nature) and the other is Para Prakriti (higher nature). Consciousness is not separate from the body; it arises from the body's atoms. The idea of a personal self or soul traveling from one body to another is a distortion of the original principle. This distorted view has been used for social control, to instill fear of sin and promise of heaven, and to provide a convenient excuse for one's suffering by blaming past lives. Acharya Prashant explains that the concept of reincarnation has been twisted due to ignorance and the fear of death. People find it difficult to accept that their suffering is their own doing, so they attribute it to past karma. He uses the analogy of a flame and a wick: when a flame is extinguished, it doesn't go anywhere; it returns to its potential state within the wick. Similarly, when the body dies, the consciousness returns to its latent state in the atoms. The idea of a specific wave named 'Moti' in the Atlantic Ocean dying and being reborn as 'Dhoti' in the Pacific Ocean is how we have misunderstood reincarnation. The true meaning of reincarnation, or rebirth, is the recycling process of nature. For an individual, the real birth happens only when one awakens from the mechanical, dead-like existence. He quotes Kabir Saheb, who says that most people are like the living dead, and true birth is to awaken to the Truth, to break free from the cycle of birth and death.
