Description

Acharya Prashant explains that religion means holding a conviction that liberates one from all other convictions. He points out that the various roles people play—such as mother, sister, or wife—are merely mental concepts and memories that vanish during sleep or unconsciousness, proving they are not the eternal truth. He defines religion as the final conviction that dissolves all others by returning to the very first mistake: the sense of 'I' or the ego. This 'I' is the root cause of all subsequent false identities and roles. While people are often diligent in fulfilling their duties as employees, parents, or children, they neglect their primary duty toward this core 'I'. He describes the 'I' as a disease whose only cure is dissolution, and religion is the process of that treatment. Using the analogy of a person going to the market for medicine but getting distracted by snacks and sales, he emphasizes that while secondary tasks have some value, forgetting the primary purpose leads to great loss. Religion is the most important yet most neglected task of bringing the 'I' to its dissolution. He advises observing how identities take hold in the present moment rather than analyzing the past. Finally, he notes that one cannot truly help or explain the truth to others while still being trapped in a role; for instance, a person acting solely as a daughter cannot truly guide her father until she transcends that limited identity.
