Description

Acharya Prashant begins by explaining a couplet from Kabir Saheb, which critiques the act of creating temples and idols from stone. He states that the greatest illusion regarding liberation (mukti) is the belief that it can be attained through our own actions. The notion that we can do something to liberate ourselves is a form of foolishness. Man has made as many efforts for liberation as he has committed follies, believing that liberation is a goal that can be achieved through the mind as a means. Our deepest effort is to know the truth, but our deepest insistence is that 'we' will be the knower. The speaker emphasizes a crucial distinction: one is not liberated *by* the self, but *from* the self. We constantly try to become liberated while remaining who we are. We want to add liberation to our lives, just as we add a house, a shop, or a market. We want to add a temple to our collection of worldly possessions. This is what Kabir Saheb refers to when he says, "Taking a stone, a temple is made with a big idol inside." The idol, created by the ego, is dependent on the ego itself and has no power. The body itself is dependent and will perish, so how can it save anyone? Worshipping a stone to cross the ocean of existence is foolishness. A wet stone cannot cross the river; those with weight on their heads will drown. The only way to cross is to be light. Acharya Prashant explains that all our efforts are a way to avoid surrender. The ego loves to make efforts because it reinforces the sense of 'I am the doer.' The ego will not do the simplest thing, which is to bow down. It will undertake the most arduous labor, but it will not bow down. He then discusses the relationship between attention (dhyan) and faith (shraddha). He states that knowledge without faith is mere suffering. Attention without faith will only lead to agony because attention will show you that you are in bondage, but it will not provide the energy to escape. You will know you are trapped in filth but will not have the energy to get out. This energy comes from faith, from satsang (the company of truth). Attention shows that you are in bondage, while satsang shows that a life free from bondage is possible. When these two combine, the path is made. Faith is the unwavering belief that liberation is possible, even if you don't know the way. It is the trust that the existence will help you, and whatever it does will have your well-being inherent in it.
