Acharya Prashant explains that if one only values the body, one will only recognize physical harm as a loss. This is because the person themselves assigns value only to the body. Conversely, if one values the mind within, they will also take care of its cleanliness. We usually value external losses and gains because we only know ourselves by what is externally visible. For instance, one gets irritated if their shirt is dirtied, but less so, or even happy, if their mind is corrupted. The people who corrupt your mind are careful not to dirty your shirt, knowing you value it more. They know you will protest if your shirt is soiled, but remain silent if your mind is polluted. As you begin to give more importance to the mind than the body, you will increasingly avoid the company of those who corrupt the mind. As long as you live a body-centric life, prioritizing bodily pleasures like delicious food, beautiful places, or sex, you will only value gross, material benefits and losses. You will be ready to sacrifice your life for material things because you identify with the gross, material body. Consequently, you will not value a place or company that purifies the mind, seeing no worth in it. The value you assign to external things reflects the value you assign to yourself. If you see yourself as the body, you will value material comforts like an air conditioner above all else. But if you identify as consciousness, knowing that the body is just its gross manifestation and your fundamental nature is the Self, you will prioritize keeping that consciousness clean. You will seek company that purifies the mind and be willing to pay any price for it. This issue is not confined to specific moments but pertains to your entire life. It is crucial to continuously observe what you give importance and value to. If you are captivated by a fragrance, you are valuing something gross and will likely not prioritize mental cleanliness. The speaker notes that often, things that provide bodily pleasure simultaneously corrupt the mind. For example, when friends gather for wine and kebabs, the body is satisfied while the mind is polluted. This happens because we value the body over the mind. In most cases, where the body finds pleasure, the mind is being defiled. Conversely, where the mind is purified, physical comforts are usually absent, which is why few are drawn to spirituality.
