Description

Acharya Prashant explains that animals also accumulate, but it cannot be called greed. An animal accumulates only as much as is necessary for its physical survival. For example, an ant carries a grain of sugar, a bird builds a nest, a lion hunts, and a dog marks its territory. Most animals define and want to protect their territory. However, you will not see an animal accumulating for many years. A camel accumulates water because it knows there is a scarcity of water in the desert, but no camel accumulates to show off to its neighbor, to make its seven generations rich, or to receive a medal or title. The reasons for their accumulation are physical. If there is a living being, an animal, then it has to protect its body. For instance, a lizard hibernates during extreme cold or heat and stores food in its body for that period, but not more than that. You will not see a rich or poor lizard, nor will you see a lizard sad about not becoming a billionaire. For animals, accumulation never becomes a disease because they know their limits. In contrast, man is the only one who does not know his limits. Man earns more for the sake of his mind than for his stomach. Man has forgotten the difference between need and greed. An animal knows its need, while man knows greed. If you also go only as far as your body demands, as far as you need to protect your body, then there is no problem. But those who have accumulated billions, will they eat it? Can they wear it? Can they do anything with it in their lifetime? Then, accumulating becomes a mental illness. This disease is not found anywhere else in existence. This accumulation is a result of fear. You want to accumulate because you think some mishap will occur tomorrow. You think, 'I don't know what will happen in the future, so I should make arrangements beforehand.' There is nothing else in the world that is so scared, so terrified as man. Everyone else has an inner trust that whatever happens, things will work out. They don't even need to think about it. Man is the only one who is faithless. He has no faith. He thinks, 'If I don't accumulate, I don't know what will happen to me tomorrow.' This lack of faith is what is called the sense of doership. The more the lack of faith, the greater the sense of doership. You will feel that if you don't do it, what will happen to you. 'I have to make my own way. If I don't care for myself, who will? The world is my enemy, I have to protect myself.' This is the thought that has been instilled in your mind. When you live with this feeling, life is hell. You are constantly scared. The more scared you are, the more you will think about the future, the more you will accumulate, the more you will prepare, and the more plans you will make. This fear of each other will make you violent and keep you in constant conflict. There is a third state of being, which is neither scared nor reckless. It is to live in a calm, composed, and aware manner. You have not been thrown into some scary place. This world has come from the same source as you. If you are good, how can the world be bad? Nothing is dangerous; only fear is dangerous. Remove the fear, and you will see how much value the future has left. Then the future will have only as much value as knowing the train's departure time, so you can pack and leave accordingly. Only that much value will remain.
