Description

Acharya Prashant explains the difference between worldly truth and spiritual Truth. He begins by stating that what is commonly called truth is merely the correction of a misperception. For instance, hearing a bell and thinking a cow is grazing, but upon turning, seeing a buffalo instead. One might say, "Oh, I found out the truth; it wasn't a cow, it was a buffalo." In this, you have only examined the aspect of truth that is visible, the scene (dṛśya). On a worldly level, truth is just about examining the scene. If a tree appears in front, is it a tree or a pole? If you call a pole a tree, you are said to be in delusion. Knowing a tree as a tree is considered speaking the truth. This is the extent of worldly truth. Spirituality, however, is not concerned with the seen (dṛśya) but with the seer (dṛṣṭā). All suffering and pain belong to the seer, not the seen. Therefore, spirituality is for the seer. The seer is troubled because they consider themselves incomplete and use the seen (the world) to try and become complete. The fundamental lie is the belief in one's own incompleteness. The Self (Ātmā) is Truth (Satya), and the ego (aham) is untruth (asatya). The Self is Truth, and the ego, which is the feeling of incompleteness, is untruth. Any action driven by the ego is a falsehood, even if you call four fingers 'four fingers'. In the worldly sense, you are a truthful person, but in the spiritual sense, your truthfulness is not established just by this, because you are saying it out of self-interest. Spirituality conducts a deeper inquiry. It asks, who said 'four'? This is the scene, but who is the seer? If the seer is true, then there is truth. If the seer is false, then even if you call four 'four', it is still a lie. The world gets stuck here. The world says, "If I call four fingers 'four', and I am still a liar?" Spirituality says you are absolutely a liar because you are saying 'four' out of self-interest. The state of the mind in which you are small, limited, and petty, and from which you think, live, or do any work, is untruth. And the state of the mind in which you are full from within, have no intention to snatch, and are eager to share, that state of mind is truth. Because completeness is truth. The Self is truth, the ego is untruth. Every worldly action can be done from two places: from truth and from untruth; from the Self and from the ego; from completeness and from incompleteness. Do not fear that if you move towards truth, you will have to leave your work. No. The center will change. Previously, you did things as a false person; now you will do them as a true person. Previously, you did things as a violent person; now you will do them as a loving person. Previously, you did things as an incomplete person; now you will do them as a complete person. Previously, you did things to get something; now you will do them to give. There is a world of qualitative difference between the two actions. Just check what your relationship is with the other, because the ego cannot do anything alone; it always forms a relationship with another. The ego is always in relation to the world. The Self can be alone; the ego cannot be alone. It always needs someone else. So, the moment the ego establishes a relationship with someone, immediately check what kind of relationship the ego is forming with them. Just by asking this, you will get the answer.
