Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the chanting of the Lord's name should not be treated as a worldly name or a ritualistic addition to one's routine. He defines a ritual as something affirmative, incremental, and planned according to a blueprint. In contrast, the Lord's name is an act of negation, subtraction, and destruction of the false. It serves as a tool to break the spell of worldly temptations, fears, and the dominance of various names that impress the mind. By invoking the Lord's name, one manages to beat the trap of worldly illusions and realizes the hollowness of all worldly names. He further clarifies that the Lord's name functions like a sword or a fire extinguisher; it is an instrument of negation used only when there is a problem or when Maya strikes. Just as a fire alarm is not a ritual because it is only activated when fire goes out of control, the Lord's name is used to hack down the unnecessary and the dominating influences of the world. It is a medicine for the disease of ignorance. Acharya Prashant concludes that once an individual is one with the truth and liberated, the name is no longer needed, as its purpose is solely to negate that which is not real.
