Description

Acharya Prashant explains that hell is not a physical place, but a state where you receive a lot of sympathy, consolation, condolence, and commiseration. It is when others agree that you are in a miserable state, which deepens your belief in your "problemed existence." The fundamental issue is not that you have problems, but that you think you are the one who can have problems, which is a mistaken identity. In hell, this belief in a "problemed identity" is reinforced. It is a place full of people ready to offer a shoulder to sob on, who will agree with and even exaggerate your self-perceived weaknesses. Hell is a place where you are not admitted if you don't have problems. In contrast, heaven is where your problems are not solved but dismissed. To solve a problem is to honor it. Heaven is the company of people who pay attention not to what you have, but to what you are. When you focus on what you are, you have little respect left for what you have. Hell focuses on what you have, while heaven reminds you of what you are. When you clearly remember who you are, you no longer need heaven; what you have then is liberation. The speaker outlines three ways of living related to mortal existence, not an afterlife: hell, heaven, and liberation. The most common way of living is being preoccupied with "what do I have?" which is hell. A rarer way is to inquire into "what am I?" which is heaven. This inquiry is about the quality of one's mind, thought, and consciousness, not measured by possessions, as all possessions are sources of problems. The fruit of constantly inquiring into one's fundamental existence is liberation, where you are freed even from the need to ask who you are.
