Description

Acharya Prashant explains that Vedanta has not become widely popular because it demands intellectual effort and poses a direct threat to the ego. He clarifies that Vedanta itself has not been corrupted; rather, human beings have become corrupted by their tendency to seek easy, comforting beliefs. Most people prefer simple, fairy-tale-like religious narratives that do not challenge their internal existence or attachments. These popular religious streams offer a 'belief system' that is easy to consume, much like a snack, requiring no deep thinking or sacrifice of the ego. In contrast, Vedanta is like a high-quality, luxury item that few are willing to pay the price for, where the ultimate price is the dissolution of the ego. He further elaborates that while popular religions provide entertainment and satisfy selfish desires without breaking the ego, Vedanta requires one to use their intelligence and face harsh truths. He uses the analogy of a Mercedes versus a cheap car to illustrate why high-quality spiritual knowledge remains rare. Many people avoid Vedanta because its core teachings, such as the world being a projection or the concept of dependent origination, are intellectually demanding and uncomfortable. Acharya Prashant concludes that while low-level stories and miracles attract large crowds, the true essence of Vedanta is reserved for those who are willing to apply their intellect and undergo the transformation necessary to move beyond their egoistic attachments.
