Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the purpose of life is not a grand, abstract concept but an immediate and practical one. He uses an analogy: if a nail in the wall is poking you while you are sitting, your purpose of life at that moment is to either remove the nail or move away. Similarly, the purpose of life is to identify what is currently causing you trouble and to remove it. To sit and contemplate the ultimate purpose of life while being in immediate pain is absurd. The first step is to see what is bothering you right now, and getting free from that is the purpose. When confronted with the idea that there are many things in life that cause trouble, the speaker's response is to get free from all of them. He finds it amusing that people would rather ask for an ointment for their wounds than remove the nails causing them, suggesting a lack of self-love and sensitivity to their own suffering. He humorously suggests that if ten nails aren't enough to make someone move, perhaps a hundred are needed. Either one has enough sensitivity to not tolerate the pain, or one needs a greater shock to be moved to action. The speaker defines liberation (mukti) not as a distant spiritual event but as something very immediate and present. Liberation means getting rid of whatever constantly keeps you irritated, in bondage, and doesn't let you live in peace. This could be a physical illness, a troubling relationship, or financial debt. Whatever is occupying your mind, liberation is getting rid of it. Liberation is not a far-off matter; it is a matter of the present moment. Acharya Prashant clarifies that things hold us because we hold onto them. Whatever has a hold on you, it is because you have a hold on it. He identifies greed as the reason we hold onto things. The moment you tell something that is holding you, "I don't want anything from you," it will release you. Therefore, the path to liberation is to see the futility of your greed and let go. When you stop holding onto things, they stop holding onto you.
