Description

A questioner, who recently left his high-profile job in the Merchant Navy, asks Acharya Prashant about the societal pressure to have a certain kind of job and lifestyle, and what a truly good and prosperous job is. He explains that he left his job because it was system-oriented, with no room for individual input or freedom. The system and the people in it were rigid, and even valid arguments for change were ignored. Acharya Prashant distinguishes between two types of complaints about a job. The first is superficial: feeling that the work process is inefficient and one's suggestions are not heard. If the system becomes more flexible, the person might return. The second complaint is deeper and more fundamental: questioning the very nature of the work itself. He asks if the work is useful or harmful, citing examples like industries that promote greed, violence (like meat processing), or exploit insecurities (like cosmetics, jewelry, or insurance sold through fear). He questions the value of working in such industries, even if they are employee-friendly and offer good salaries. He emphasizes that the work a person does for ten hours a day defines their life and consciousness. Therefore, it is crucial to ask what the work is, its purpose, and its impact on the world. A person's identity is their work. He states that a person is defined by the work they do. He points out that many industries, such as the wedding industry, pre-wedding photoshoots, and gaming, are based on exploiting people's lower emotions. He concludes by saying that the two things that can make a person internally dead are choosing the wrong job and the wrong partner, and unfortunately, most people get both wrong.
