Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the definition of Yoga must start from one's definition of oneself. If you are convinced that you are the body, then your Yoga has to be physical. For physical troubles like a sore knee, an inflamed back, or a frozen shoulder, the solution has to be physical, and the physical kind of Yoga is the right thing. However, if your primary concerns are not physical but mental, and you address yourself as the restless mind, then you need the Yoga of the mind. He then asks us to observe the condition of mankind today. In the 21st century, with great advancements in medical science and industrial production, most of our physical problems can be taken care of. While many problems are psychosomatic and require healing the mind as well, the bulk of mankind's problems lie with the mind. The general condition of humanity is that the body is almost alright, but the mind is extremely unhealthy, neglected, and restless. Therefore, what we need more is the Yoga of the mind. This has to be clearly understood. Yoga literally means union. If the mind is sick, we must ask: what is it that the mind wants to unite with? Answering this is the proper definition of Yoga for today. It is an inquiry into who we are and what we really want. The mind is in a state of separation (viyog), separated from something it desperately wants. The speaker states that it is a travesty if the word 'Yoga' becomes synonymous with physical exercise. The restless mind's desires lead to blind consumption of resources, which is leading to the utter destruction of mankind. The Yoga we need is one that can save man by helping him understand the mind and its tendencies, not by merely exercising the body.
