Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a questioner who has identified four central points in his teachings: 1. Choice (suffering is a person's choice), 2. Meaningful Action (choosing the right work, as wrong work leads to a wrong life), 3. Guru (one must listen to the Guru), and 4. Strength (one must abandon weakness). The questioner asks for the method to implement these four points. Acharya Prashant corrects the questioner, stating that there are not four, but five central points in his teachings. The fifth point, which the questioner has suppressed, is: "Never ask for the method." He explains that asking for a method is a form of internal cleverness, a conspiracy to avoid change. It's a way to delay action by saying, "I will do it, just tell me how," or to shift responsibility by saying, "You are the one teaching, so you come and change my life for me." He emphasizes that just as one's life is a result of their choices, asking for a method is also a choice—a choice to not act but to seek external instructions. He elaborates that when the disease is imaginary, the diagnosis itself is the cure. The disease is the false self-image and the wrong ideas one holds about oneself. The cure is to see this falseness. He argues that asking for a method is a way to protect one's weakness. He uses the example of Ravana from the Ramayana, who knew he was wrong but was not ready to change. Ravana was willing to accept death and the destruction of his entire clan rather than improve. A demon (Rakshas) is one who is ready to be destroyed but not ready to change, even when standing before the ultimate truth. He contrasts this with Vibhishana, who undertook a difficult task without asking for a method. Those who genuinely want to improve do not ask for methods; they simply act. Asking for a method is a sign of a passive, toxic ego that wants to remain as it is.
