Description

Acharya Prashant explains that while there have always been many who impart bookish knowledge, Swami Vivekananda was unique because of the ideal he presented by living his life. He points out that very few saints, sages, or ascetics would have had a body as well-built and shapely as Vivekananda's. Sports and exercise had a fixed place in his daily routine, and he would also tell his companions that exercise is necessary. This presents a subtle point: on one hand, the body must be maintained, but on the other, one must not get attached to it. The body is like an instrument, a resource that has to be used. To use it, it must be kept healthy and strong. Vivekananda's message was to keep the body strong but not to form an identity with it, and when the time comes, to be ready to renounce it with a smile. He would say to the body, "The more we serve you, the more we oil you and give you exercise, we will take twice the work from you." The body is not just to be honored; it is meant for work, not to be polished and kept safe in cotton. This was a new idea. A monk playing football was a completely new concept. The old belief in India was that a monk would be frail, talk about death, and have no connection to life. Swami Vivekananda infused strength into the collapsing spirituality of a collapsing nation, stating, "Strength is life, weakness is death." This is a very valuable and relevant point because India had become old and decrepit, having completely forgotten strength. Swami Vivekananda brought a new life force into this old India. He presented a revolutionary ideal from life. One should not see him merely as a Swami, a speaker, or a writer. To understand him, one must look at his life. He was a beautiful young man, and when you get close to his life, you will fall in love with him. Many have talked about yoga, but Vivekananda showed it by living it, presenting a new kind of ideal. He brought spirituality down to the ground, to the streets of America. If knowledge has entered your life in any way, then a mission is needed. If Vivekananda met a guru like Ramakrishna, then the Ramakrishna Mission was bound to follow. The speaker then asks the audience, if you have received knowledge from a guru, where is your mission? Where is your work? He concludes by saying, "Don't tell me what you know, show me how you are living." The central point that Vivekananda grasped was strength. He wants to see how much strength is in your life.
