Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question about the ego's tendency to misinterpret spiritual teachings. The questioner refers to a bhajan by Kabir Saheb, admitting they misinterpreted it with an arrogant thought: "The real thing is already with me, so I don't need anything from the world." Acharya Prashant explains that this is a dangerous misunderstanding. He clarifies that the statement "the real thing is with me" is a product of deep ego, whereas the statement of surrender is "I am with the real thing." The former implies that the real is a possession of the 'I', while the latter signifies the dissolution of the 'I' into the real. He further elaborates that the ego is cunning and uses even the highest spiritual truths for its own justification and convenience. When the ego hears teachings about renunciation, it quickly claims to have already renounced everything to avoid the actual practice and effort. He cautions that for someone who is not yet established in Truth, the need is to hold on to the right things, like the teachings of a Guru or a saint like Kabir, not to prematurely claim renunciation. You are not yet in a state to let go; you must first hold on tightly to the support of the Guru. Acharya Prashant explains that the ego's state is one of constant restlessness and a desire to escape. He uses Kabir's couplet, "Maya and shadow are the same, few know this. They chase the one who runs, and run from the one who faces them," to illustrate the nature of Maya (illusion). Maya, like a shadow, pursues you when you run from the Truth (the light) and disappears when you face it. The primary trick of Maya is to prevent you from turning towards the source of light, the Guru. It does this by making your own mind your enemy, which then prevents you from seeking help. He concludes by stating that life is a continuous test, and one must remain constantly vigilant against the tricks of the mind and Maya.
