Description

Acharya Prashant explains the meaning of Shri Krishna's statement, "Whenever there is a decline of Dharma, I will come." To understand what Shri Krishna is saying, one must look towards their own mind. Ultimately, spirituality is concerned only with the mind and the Self (Atma), and nothing else. The dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjun is actually a conversation between the Self and the mind. Spirituality is not about the stories of individuals, which is merely gossip. Its subject is not worldly events, people, or objects, but the mind. Acharya Prashant describes the mind as a "lover compelled by habits." The mind has a great love for the real, which is its true nature, but its habits are old, deep, and impure. The mind is caught between these two forces. The habits are Adharma (unrighteousness), and the love for Truth is Dharma. The ego (Aham) is suspended between Dharma and Adharma. When the ego moves towards love and Truth, it is Arjun. When it becomes love itself, it is Krishna. And when it moves towards its habits and Adharma, it is Duryodhana. The ego's inherent nature (Swabhav) is Truth, but its conditioning (Prakriti) is untruth. When Shri Krishna says, "Whenever there is a decline of Dharma, I will come," it refers to the state of the mind. The decline of Dharma happens when the ego is dominated by its habits and moves towards Adharma. This movement increases the mind's distance from its true nature, which is Krishna or Truth, causing immense internal suffering. The mind cannot tolerate this distance for long. The statement does not necessarily mean a physical incarnation will appear. Instead, it means that when the suffering from being in Adharma becomes unbearable, the quality of Krishna (Krishnatva) or Truth will arise from within the individual. The extreme decline of Dharma itself becomes the reason for the re-establishment of Dharma. This is why it is said, "Satyamev Jayate" (Truth alone triumphs), because Truth is our fundamental nature, and we must eventually return to it.
