Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of loneliness and the nature of desires. He explains that the solutions for loneliness can be understood at different levels. The solution suggested by the body is to seek a partner, while the mind's solution is to seek friends. These are often driven by external conditioning, such as ideas from movies and advertisements that promote superficial ways of dealing with loneliness, like drinking with friends or gossiping about relationships. The highest and purest truth, he states, is that the Self (Atma) is inherently unattached (asang) and non-dual (advaita), and therefore does not require any company. In contrast, the lowest solution is to indulge in any available distraction to escape the feeling of loneliness, such as befriending anyone just to gossip or engaging in prostitution. The journey is to move from these lower solutions to higher ones by seeking better company. This better company is not necessarily a physical person but can be found in activities that absorb the mind, like watching a great movie, reading a good book, or being engrossed in a sport. When one is deeply immersed, the feeling of loneliness vanishes. Acharya Prashant redefines the concept of 'company' (sangat). True company is not about physical proximity but about connecting with the highest expression of a person. For instance, one can be in the company of a great filmmaker through their film, where they have poured out their heart. Similarly, the company of great figures like Shri Krishna is found through their teachings, such as the Gita, not through their physical form which is no longer present. The quality of company depends on which aspect of a person one chooses to connect with. He concludes by distinguishing between good company (susangati) and bad company (kusangati). This distinction is not about choosing one person over another, but about choosing to engage with the highest, most sublime aspect of a person versus their lowest, most trivial aspect. The choice is whether to be a connoisseur who appreciates the highest in others or a 'paparazzi' who focuses on their base nature. The solution to loneliness lies in elevating the quality of one's company, moving towards that which is uplifting and ultimately realizing the unattached nature of the Self.
