Description

Acharya Prashant explains the concept of 'clean senses' as described by Ashtavakra. He clarifies that clean senses do not mean filling them with pure emotions, but rather not filling them with any emotions or meanings at all. Senses should act merely as a path that does not add or subtract anything from the traveler. When the mind stops assigning labels like good or bad, pure or impure, or sin and virtue to what it perceives, it reaches a state of liberation. He emphasizes that the desire for liberation only exists as long as one feels bound; true liberation is when the mind stops projecting the meaning of bondage onto any sight or sound. Addressing the concept of the 'Self as one without a second', Acharya Prashant notes that Ashtavakra considers those who hold onto the fixed idea that 'Truth is one' as dull-witted. Such a claim is an attempt by the ego to capture the infinite in words. He argues that the source of the universe cannot be a number because numbers belong to the mental world. While 'one' is a number that leads to division and potential conflict, 'zero' (shunya) represents a state where the ego is dissolved because the Truth is beyond reach, and 'fullness' (purnata) represents a state of supreme love where the divine is seen in everything. He concludes that there are only two authentic ways to live: the way of the Buddha (Shunya), which is total silence and lack of claims, and the way of the lover like Meera or Namdev (Purnata), who sees the divine in every atom. Any middle ground, such as defining the Truth as 'one', is a mental trap that leads to misery. True wisdom lies in either admitting that nothing can be said about the Truth or seeing that the Truth is everywhere, leaving no room for the ego to create 'the other'.
