Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the Spiritual Quotient (SQ) is simply one's intention to remain honest, the courage to live one's love, and the willingness to face the ugliness within when looking at oneself. He states that there is no SQ without self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is difficult not due to a lack of access to external resources like a university or library, but because one is unwilling to admit the truth about oneself. One is readily available and accessible to oneself, yet self-knowledge remains elusive because one cannot bear to admit what one comes across when looking inward. SQ is the willingness to not be dishonest with oneself, the love towards truth, and the courage to admit that one has been a lie all along. If you have these qualities—love, honesty, and courage—you have a high SQ. To develop SQ, one must make a choice. It is not something to be developed like a muscle but a choice to be exercised. The problem is not that people lack a 'spiritual muscle,' but that they do not exercise it. This exercise is a choice. Grace is unconditional, like the sun shining brightly, but one must choose to come out from under the rock to receive it. The condition is imposed by the recipient, not by grace itself. Similarly, one must make a decision to not be afraid. This is not a simplistic or utopian idea, but the only practical way, as practice alone does not lead to this decision. A moment comes when one simply decides to drop the nonsense, and this moment might not come even after thousands of years of practice. It is a matter of choice. Regarding the lack of emotional fulfillment in learning, Acharya Prashant distinguishes between emotion and understanding the importance of a project. One must know what is truly important, which requires attention, honesty, and a love that does not allow for self-delusion. Emotion is often about trivial things, is temporal, and drains energy. In contrast, heightened consciousness craves continuity and is the discipline of energy. When you truly understand, a beautiful thing happens: your emotion becomes a follower of your understanding. This is the best state to aspire to, where emotion is not your enemy or a blind master, but follows your understanding. To balance social and spiritual life, one should socialize with spiritual people, so that the social and spiritual are not mutually exclusive.
