Acharya Prashant explains that the results of actions (karmaphal) and destiny (prarabdha) are not independent objects; consciousness is primary. A conscious decision has the power to cut through all results of past actions. There is no compulsion to remain in bondage until the karmic results are exhausted. If one must endure the entire duration of their karmaphal, then what is the purpose of spirituality? The results of actions are only for the one who is still willing to experience the fruits of their past actions, for the one who is still the same person who performed the action. Only that person is compelled to experience the consequences. Spirituality is described as an inner death, or a 'great death' (mahamrityu). This means the doer of the action ceases to exist, so who is left to bear the fruit? The purpose of spirituality is to become separate from one's past. When you are separate from the past, you no longer have to bear the consequences of its actions. The speaker clarifies that the situation with Arjun was not about destiny or fate, but about Arjun's conscious choice. Anyone can make this conscious choice, regardless of their past. To be dead to the past is liberation (mukti). He further explains that the future is the corpse of the past. One who cannot die to the past will continue to carry it forward. The past contains the action (karma), and the future holds its result (karmaphal). Vedanta teaches that the only thing that makes a person special is making the right choice. No one is special by caste, birth, age, or experience. The only thing that is truly special from an individual's perspective is the Truth. However, from the perspective of Truth itself, it is without any special attributes. The speaker concludes by emphasizing the importance of having an unconditional principle in life, something one will not compromise on even at the cost of life itself. This, he states, is the true meaning of 'maryada' (dignity/limit), and it must be a conscious choice.
