Acharya Prashant addresses the common misconception that childhood illnesses, such as cancer, are the result of sins from past lives or curses from sages. He explains that this belief stems from the false assumption that every person is an isolated, individual self. When we view a child as a separate entity, we try to find the cause of their suffering within their own personal history. Since a five-year-old has little history, people resort to theories of past-life karma. However, Acharya Prashant asserts that the individual self is an illusion; humanity and the world are interconnected. The suffering seen in one child is a manifestation of a general, global condition rather than a personal one. He argues that the causes of such illnesses are collective and environmental, such as industrial pollution, noise, stress, and climate change. For instance, a factory in one part of the world or an individual's lifestyle choices, like meat consumption, contribute to global ecological damage that affects everyone. By blaming past lives, people dishonestly evade their own responsibility for the current state of the world. Acharya Prashant emphasizes that spirituality is about realizing this oneness. When we understand that we are not separate, service becomes natural because the well-being of others is inseparable from our own. He dismisses astrology and superstitions as baseless beliefs that fill the void where true faith should be. Furthermore, Acharya Prashant warns against the dangers of listening to foolish or superstitious ideas. He compares the mind to the body, noting that just as one must be careful about consuming clean food and water, one must be extremely vigilant about what enters the mind through the ears and eyes. He critiques the popular saying 'listen to everyone, but do what your heart says,' explaining that the mind is shaped by what it hears. If you listen to everyone, your mind becomes a collection of those external influences, and you lose your autonomy. True spirituality aims to dissolve the ego, which is the root of the false sense of separation and the cause of suffering.
