Description

Acharya Prashant clarifies the common misconception regarding 'living in the present.' He explains that time consists only of the past and the future; the present moment, as a physical point in time, does not truly exist because by the time we perceive anything, it has already become the past. He defines 'Vartaman' (the present) not as a segment of time, but as the Truth or the Soul (Atma). While the past and future belong to the realm of nature (Prakriti) and the mind, the present is that which truly exists and remains detached as a witness to the flow of time. Therefore, living in the present means living in Truth rather than in the ego. He further elaborates that living in the ego is characterized by incompleteness, desires, and self-centeredness. In contrast, living in the present or the Soul means living without desire (Nishkam) and with compassion. He refutes the consumerist idea that living in the moment means immediate self-gratification. Regarding environmental concerns, he explains that only the ego, which identifies with the body, worries about its own limited lifespan. One who lives in the Soul recognizes a deeper connection to all beings and acts out of compassion for the future, even if they will not be physically present. Addressing a question about his frequent availability making him seem 'casual' rather than 'special,' Acharya Prashant explains that the ego seeks to be rare and inaccessible to maintain a sense of importance. Truth, however, is like breath or a heartbeat—essential and constant rather than a rare ornament. He emphasizes that his goal is not to appear special or to dazzle the audience, but to become a natural part of their lives. When truth becomes a daily habit, it loses its 'special' or 'shocking' quality and becomes a steady, life-giving presence.
