Description

Acharya Prashant clarifies the distinction between 'Daan' (donation), 'Daam' (price), and 'Dakshina' (offering). He begins by correcting the notion that a donation has teeth, stating that it is the price that has teeth. However, even a price for a physical object, if transacted honestly, is simply a market exchange and has no teeth. The problem arises when something is presented as a donation but is, in reality, a transaction for a price. This false donation, he warns, has poison-laced teeth that can tear apart not just the stomach, but the mind and life itself. The speaker explains that a true donation involves delivering a material object to a place where it has the highest utility. From a spiritual perspective, the only utility of any object for a person is to calm their mind and help them attain liberation and truth. Therefore, a donation is the act of placing a material object where it can best serve the purpose of liberation. This act is rooted in compassion, where one gives something that is useful to them, understanding that it will be of even greater use to someone else in their journey towards liberation. Contrasting this with 'Dakshina', he explains that a donation is given with the hope of a future benefit for the recipient, while 'Dakshina' is given after a benefit has already been received. 'Dakshina' is another name for grace; it is an expression of gratitude when one's inner vessel has been filled by another's presence and efforts. The true 'Guru Dakshina' (offering to a Guru) is the disciple's own transformation. When the disciple, who once received light from the Guru, becomes a source of that light for the world, that is the real offering. The Guru desires nothing from the disciple except that they give the Guru's wisdom to the entire world.
