Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the core of the Vedantic approach is the inquiry into one's true identity. He suggests that because it is difficult to directly understand the doer, one must use actions as a proxy to gain self-knowledge. Without understanding who one truly is, all actions, beliefs, and even existence itself remain futile. He emphasizes that karma serves as a surrogate to help an individual understand their real nature. Regarding reincarnation, Acharya Prashant clarifies that the individual person does not take rebirth. Instead, it is the underlying tendencies and desires for fulfillment that manifest repeatedly through physical existence. He compares this to the ocean, where individual waves appear and disappear, never to return as the same wave, yet the ocean continues to produce waves. This cycle of tendencies is what constitutes the true meaning of rebirth in the Vedantic tradition. He further describes the essence of Vedantic wisdom as the realization that a person is not who they believe themselves to be. By using the process of negation to strip away false identities and concepts, a person can discover a powerful and beautiful reality that makes life meaningful. He advises that the reward for doing the right thing is instantaneous and internal. If one expects an external reward, their goodness is incomplete. The punishment for wrong action is the immediate suffocation and loss of self that occurs during the act itself. Ultimately, living a right life unburdens a person from the anxiety of future consequences.
