Description

Acharya Prashant addresses questions regarding the science behind wearing rings with gemstones and the significance of the mangalsutra. He dismisses these beliefs as disgusting superstitions born from fear, which are difficult to eradicate, especially when so-called gurus, who often benefit from them, perpetuate them. He states that one's true nature is the Self (Atma), and even the body is just a covering. To seek well-being by adding more coverings like jewelry onto the body is futile. He sarcastically remarks that a fool who wears a ring simply becomes a fool with a ring; the foolishness itself does not change. He questions the logic of believing that merely touching metal to the body can bring any real benefit. He humorously illustrates how people get trapped by these beliefs, like a ring getting stuck on a finger after gaining weight. He suggests that the gurus who promote these practices are often sponsored by the gems and jewelry industry, which profits from such superstitions. He points out the absurdity of what spirituality has to do with rings and mangalsutras. Acharya Prashant asserts that the only true science is that the Self is the truth, and everything else is a delusion. He clarifies that neither spiritual science nor physical science gives any credence to the power of rings or mangalsutras. He explains that one's misfortune begins with falling into superstition. The true 'mangal sutra' (auspicious formula) is found in the scriptures like the Gita and the Upanishads, as only they can bring true well-being. He concludes that people are not truly religious; instead, they have adopted cheap substitutes like wearing jewelry, effectively making the jeweler's shop their temple. This business of rings, he warns, will lead one nowhere.
