Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the soul (Atman) cannot have a name, yet many names have been given to it to help one become alert. He suggests considering some of these names. The soul is unattached (Asang). If your life becomes such that you are addicted to someone's company for 24 hours, then understand that you have made them your soul. This is a mistake because you have turned away from the real soul, which is unattached. If anything—be it your business, an idea, or a person—becomes a constant presence in your thoughts, you have made it your soul. Similarly, the soul is inevitable (Anivarya). Truth is also called irresistible (Durnivar); you cannot be free from it or deal with it. If something becomes essential in your life, or if someone has control over you, it is a sign that a mishap is occurring. Guests may come and go in a house, but the owner remains the owner. You must see if a visitor is becoming the owner. No person, idea, or enterprise can be the owner. The soul is also the source (Srot), the first (Pratham). The first place in your life's priority list should start from number two, as the first place is reserved for the Absolute (Brahman), which can also be called emptiness or the great void. You must check if someone has become the first in your life. The soul is infinite (Anant). You should see if you have brought something into your life whose end you have to struggle to save. If there is something that can end, that you have to work hard to protect, then know that something is wrong, because the soul is infinite. The soul is liberation (Mukti). If you have adopted something in your life that has become a bondage for you, then understand that it is trying to take the place of your soul. You cannot give your soul to anyone; it is not in your possession. The soul is also spotless (Niranjan) and thoughtless (Nirvichar). The subject of your life should be one that makes you spotless and calms all thoughts, not one that is thought-provoking. The soul is homeless (Aniket), meaning it has no fixed abode and cannot be confined within four walls. If someone comes into your life and compels you to settle down, to wear bonds, or to be limited, they are violating the nature of the soul. All these names are given to help you become alert. Look at the name and see if the reality is its opposite in your life; if so, you are trapped. When you give an identity to yourself, you get into trouble. The problem arises when you internalize an identity, believing 'I am that thing'.
