Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question, "Who started the cycle of karma, and where did it come from?" He explains that if one has understood that behind all events there is a cyclical system where things rise and fall, then one should stop at this understanding. He advises against going further to ask who is running this cycle. If it feels like the cycle is running, the only task is to reach a state where it no longer feels like anything is running. This state of not feeling is called Brahman. However, one must first reach the point of seeing that everything is cyclical. The speaker contrasts the cyclical view with the mind's linear perspective. The mind never understands that events are cyclical; it always perceives them as linear. For example, the mind thinks, "Whatever I am doing will lead to my progress," believing it is moving forward. People talk in terms of moving up or down, or something good or bad happening to them, which is a linear way of thinking. Shifting from this linear thought to a cyclical one, where one sees oneself in a circle or a cycle, is a significant step forward. It's not about going up and down but about going round and round. We often forget that we have been going through these ups and downs for a very long time, which is itself a cyclical pattern. Once it is clear that the game of life is not about moving up and down but about being stuck in a circle, one should not ask who created the circle, why it was created, or where it came from. The next step is simply to break free from that circle and fly away. It is no longer a matter of asking questions but of taking flight. The speaker uses an analogy: if you thought you were trapped by concrete walls and then discovered they were made of cardboard, you wouldn't sit and contemplate who made them. If you were truly in trouble, you would break them and escape. If you are still contemplating, it means you were not truly suffering. This contemplation itself is Maya. Breaking free is Brahman. Contemplation can reveal that the walls are false, but it cannot take you out. For that, faith, courage, and truth are needed.
