Acharya Prashant explains that the definition of authority is anything that proclaims itself to be the truth in itself. The word "author" means original, so authority means originality. Only the Truth is original, the point from where everything comes. When Jiddu Krishnamurti says there is no authority, he means that no object can be taken as the Truth, whether it's an inanimate object like a book or a living object like a guru. Nobody is to be taken as the absolute truth because the Truth cannot come in a form, be objectified, or stand in front of you as a thing, place, or person. One should not be too quick to accept their own assessments and judgments. When you fall for something or are afraid of something, you are taking it to be real. However, only the Truth is real. If you knew something was unreal, you could not be afraid of it. Therefore, nothing should be taken as the Truth. Whatever you are seeing is being seen by you, the seer. To take a seen thing as the Truth is to believe too much in the capacity of the seer, which is egoistic. The ego wants to believe that its perceptions, such as the world, love, or dreams, are real. It wants to take its own experiences, likes, dislikes, and past as authority because they are "mine." When something is given the status of the Truth, it becomes unquestionable, and inquiry is stifled. Whatever is in front of you is in front of *you*, and you are not absolute. Therefore, everything must be available to inquiry, investigation, and questioning. When you question something, you are, in fact, questioning your own seeing. This questioning cannot happen if you declare that you have already come to the Truth. Never believe that the journey has ended or that the ego itself is the Truth. Equate authority with Truth, and that's why nothing is the authority. Authorizing is not the same as taking something as authority. To authorize is to license or allow, which is a different matter. Even though the ego is classically and absolutely unreal, to us, it is the only reality. We cannot hoodwink ourselves and say the ego is false and we are not suffering when we actually are. Therefore, you have to work your way out of the ego, through the ego, in the middle of the ego. You have to start from where you are and investigate. Inquiry is the way. You must engage with the ego, not unilaterally dismiss it. Talk to it, but you are not to believe in it, nor pretend you don't believe in it at all, because you do. Engage with the world in the right way; spirituality is not about rejecting it.
