Description

Acharya Prashant explains the fundamental distinction between desire and love, noting that while both involve an object, their purposes differ entirely. In desire, the object itself becomes the purpose, leading to a state of blindness where the individual equates the object with the ultimate goal. This often results in dissatisfaction once the object is attained, as the underlying need for fulfillment remains unmet. In contrast, love recognizes the object merely as a resource or a means to serve the higher purpose of liberation and truth. Love maintains a constant awareness of the ultimate goal and does not conflate the object with the highest reality. He further elaborates that desire is rooted in the lower aspects of one's being, such as the physical body, and therefore seeks to relate to the lower, more superficial layers of another person. This is described as a form of violence because it ignores the higher potential of the other. Love, however, originates from a higher point within the individual and seeks to relate to the highest point in the other, such as their wisdom or spirit. While desire seeks blind gratification and consumption, love seeks illuminated liberation. Ultimately, the nature of a relationship depends on whether it reminds one of the truth and liberation or leads to further bondage and suffering.
