Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the issue of the Indian caste system by stating that any criteria used to divide one person from another is bogus. He questions the validity of using birth as a basis for a division of labor, asking how birth can determine a person's vocation. He illustrates this by questioning how it can be guaranteed that an ironsmith's son will be skilled with metals or that a priest's son will be a wise person. He explains that the caste system is an expression of the ego's tendency to divide. Since the ego is a limited entity, it thrives on boundaries and finds various ways to create them. He lists other criteria the ego uses for division, such as gender, money, economic status, skin color, ethnicity, race, and creed. He points out that this tendency is not unique to Hinduism; a rigorous caste system also exists among Muslims, and divisions are present in Christianity as well. Even reformist streams like Sikhism and Buddhism, which emerged to purge Hinduism of its corruptions, have caste distinctions. Acharya Prashant asserts that the caste system is a relic that should be relegated to history and museums, and finds it astounding that a debate over it still exists. The way to make caste disappear, he suggests, is to not even know a person's caste and to assess them for who they are. He links the belief in caste to other forms of foolishness like ritualism, superstition, and violence, all stemming from the same root: ignorance of the Self. He refers to the Vajrasuchika Upanishad, which states that everyone is born a Shudra, meaning the body is Shudra, and one's status of consciousness is determined by the choices made in life. Ultimately, he concludes that caste is a mental construct, an imagination of the mind, and to drop it, one needs self-knowledge to understand why the mind clings to such divisions.
