Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about how to know if one is on the right path to liberation. He begins by clarifying that one does not have to go towards liberation, but rather, one must go against their bondages. The test to determine if the direction is correct is to see whether the bondages are weakening. If they are, the direction is right; otherwise, the approach is flawed. He explains that concepts like Truth, liberation, Brahman, and the Self are not things, places, or entities to be attained. Instead, they are methods. These methods are meant to instill courage and faith, providing the conviction that Maya (illusion) is not the ultimate or most powerful force. The idea of Truth is introduced to give us the confidence that it is greater than Maya, which we might otherwise consider supreme since it constantly surrounds and influences us. Therefore, these spiritual terms are tools to build the courage needed to confront Maya. The speaker emphasizes that one should not try to attain Truth as if it were an object or a thought. Truth is simply a method to transcend falsehood. Consequently, extensive discussions about Truth or liberation are not as beneficial as focusing on falsehood and bondage. The real work lies in understanding the tricks and games of falsehood. He uses an analogy: to cure a disease like Corona, scientists must study the virus, not just praise the state of health. Similarly, to be free, one must understand bondage. We often make the mistake of praying for strength without investigating the source of our weakness. This is a futile exercise. The real spiritual work is to stop falsehood, not to attain Truth.
