Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the questioner's confusion by first correcting the notion that spirituality is a path. He explains that idioms like 'the spiritual path' are misleading because they suggest it is one option among many. In reality, all paths are worldly paths. He uses the analogy of the world being a vast jungle with countless paths within it. All these paths, whether highways or small trails, are part of the world (sansaar); there is no separate spiritual path within this jungle. Instead of being a path, spirituality is described as light or illumination. The primary problem of the world, the jungle, is not its inherent dangers like swamps, pits, or wild animals, but the fact that people navigate it with their eyes closed. Spirituality is the light that allows one to see. This light can come from external sources like a Guru or scriptures, or it can be one's own inner understanding. This light forces one to open their eyes and see things as they are. The external light is necessary to activate the inner, dormant light of understanding, which would otherwise remain passive and useless. Acharya Prashant clarifies that a spiritual life means living with open eyes and awareness, regardless of the path one is on. It involves questioning every aspect of one's life: relationships, sources of income, media consumption, and emotional reactions. This is the true meaning of spirituality, not escaping the world or indulging in fantasies about supernatural experiences. He dismisses notions of fairies, ringing bells, or awakening powers as mere entertainment or magic tricks, not spirituality. Addressing the questioner's feelings of escapism and alienation, the speaker points out that this stems from the misconception of spirituality as something separate from the world. One cannot actually escape the world. The goal is to live correctly within the world, which requires continuously choosing the right path with open eyes. The spiritual life is about bringing this conscious awareness to every action. Quoting Kabir Saheb, he says, 'This world is a thorny bush,' but one gets entangled and dies in it only when their eyes are closed. With open eyes, one can navigate around the thorns.
