Description

Acharya Prashant explains that spirituality is fundamentally for the ego, as the ultimate truth does not require it. The entire field of spiritual practice is dedicated to the dissolution of the ego. He describes the ego as being in a state of constant suffering, like a person on fire. Instead of extinguishing this fire, people often distract themselves with worldly affairs like business or marriage. Spirituality teaches the ego to be truly self-interested by prioritizing the resolution of its own suffering over external entanglements. He emphasizes that the ego is not just a part of us but constitutes our entire current identity—every thought, cell, and experience. To find liberation, one must stop providing support to the ego through attachments, fears, and constant mental preoccupations. Acharya Prashant clarifies that being a householder is a mental state rather than a physical one. A person can have a family and a home without being a 'householder' in the spiritual sense, provided these external elements do not occupy the inner space of the mind. He uses the analogy of salt or pepper on a salad to describe worldly relationships; they provide flavor to life but should not become the main meal. Sannyas, or renunciation, is defined as keeping everything in its rightful place—using worldly things for their utility without letting them dominate one's inner consciousness or replacing the pursuit of truth.
