Description

Acharya Prashant explains that Maya is anything that dominates the mind as an object, whether through attraction or repulsion. He defines Maya as the mind's tendency to become occupied by forms, names, thoughts, or individuals, making them the center of one's attention. When any mental construct—be it a person, a desire, or even a spiritual goal like liberation—becomes excessively important, it is Maya. He quotes Kabir Saheb, stating that whatever does not leave the mind is Maya. Since the mind operates within time and space, everything it holds has a shape, color, or history; taking these mental images seriously is the essence of Maya. Conversely, when the mind is centered on that which is nameless and unthinkable, it is free from Maya. He further elaborates that Maya never presents itself directly but always assumes the form of something else, often appearing as something highly valuable or frightening. It thrives on attraction and repulsion, driving individuals to run toward or away from things with great energy. Acharya Prashant distinguishes between attraction and love, noting that Maya flourishes in attraction because it involves forms and mental preferences, whereas true love is beyond such limitations and causes Maya to flee. He also explains that Maya is nourished by delusion and fear but is destroyed by attention and awareness. Attention allows one to see the reality beyond the superficial image. Finally, he describes Maya as a substitute for truth that hides what exists and projects what does not. This is referred to as the powers of 'covering' and 'projection.' Maya leads to a state of madness where one sees love or liberation where they do not exist. To be free from Maya, one must honestly list everything that currently occupies the mind and recognize it as Maya. He suggests that knowing Maya for what it is constitutes the path to liberation. By observing the mind's attachments and identifying them as Maya, one can move toward a state of peace and truth.
