Description

Acharya Prashant explains that for most people, religious scriptures are merely decorative items. They are good for keeping in the house or adorning the prayer room, but people do not actually walk on their path or make them their life force. Instead, people follow the teachings of others who are their real gurus. These real gurus are people like relatives, neighbors, and movie actors. These actors now give life advice, telling people how to live and setting relationship goals. The speaker asserts that these are the gurus people are actually learning from. Therefore, if one is ruined, they should complain to these gurus, not to Shri Krishna, because they are following what these gurus have taught. The speaker points out that even advertisements have adopted a preachy tone. For instance, an ad for socks or underwear might have a tagline like, "Live life to the fullest." He questions how a shopkeeper selling underwear can distribute knowledge, yet people readily accept this knowledge with folded hands. He highlights the confusion where people treat actors as gurus and gurus as actors. He explains that the common person's mind is "filmy," meaning it is fictional and follows a pre-written script. Everything in their lives—relationships, marriage, family, society, and goals—is pre-scripted and thus, like a film. He questions where figures like Shri Krishna or Ashtavakra fit into these pre-scripted life stories. When making important life decisions, such as marriage, people do not consult the Upanishadic rishis; they ask their relatives. Therefore, if the marriage is eating them up, they should not blame the rishis or religion, as they never walked on the path of religion. He also addresses the common complaint of people who say they have been reciting scriptures for years without any results. He compares this to daily chores, stating that superficial actions without heartfelt engagement will not yield any benefit. He concludes by noting that many people claim to listen to him for years, but their questions reveal they haven't truly absorbed the teachings, much like listening to a radio in the background while being occupied with other tasks.
