Description

Acharya Prashant explains the meaning of a couplet by Kabir Saheb: "Speak such words that you lose your sense of self, cooling others and yourself." He states that to understand this, one must first know the meaning of "coolness" (sheetalta). This coolness is not about speaking sweetly or in a way that doesn't offend anyone. The true meaning of coolness is understood by first recognizing the mind's natural state, which is one of constant "burning." This burning is a fire within us, which is the mind itself, the "I." We are constantly in agony, with a smoldering heat, smoke, and suffering inside. This inner turmoil is caused by the mind being pulled outwards, towards external events and concerns. The more the mind is drawn outwards, the more it suffers. "Outward" refers to a place where you are not, an unrealized image, or a future that has not yet arrived. The more the mind is pulled towards these external things, the more it burns and moves away from the self. People who constantly talk about the future or other places are pulling you outwards, causing you to burn. Coolness, therefore, is when the mind, instead of wandering, returns to the self and stays there. This is meditation, living in the present moment. The mind usually resides everywhere except with you, and the farther it is, the more it burns. Coolness is achieved when the mind is with you, free from thoughts of here and there, not running towards the future or others, but sitting peacefully. Acharya Prashant then elaborates on "losing the sense of self" (mann ka aapa khoye). "Aapa" refers to the ego, the sense of "I" or "mine." The mind constantly operates from the belief that it is a separate, isolated unit that must fend for itself. This feeling of "I have to take care of myself" is the source of tension and burning. "Losing the sense of self" means letting go of this feeling, realizing that you are one with the whole. Just as you depend on the sun, the soil, and the entire system of existence, you are not separate from it. The sense of a separate "I" is false and the root of suffering. Therefore, one should speak words that do not awaken another's ego or sense of separateness. Instead of fueling their fears about the future, one should remind them that they are not in danger, that they are one with the whole, and that this existence is their home. This is what truly cools the mind.
