Description

Acharya Prashant explains that spiritual progress is essentially the disciple's movement toward the Guru. He defines the Guru as the ultimate destination of the spiritual journey, representing what one's true nature and destiny ought to be, while the disciple represents one's current state. He clarifies that while the Guru is fundamentally formless, a physical Guru becomes necessary for those who identify strongly with their own bodies. Since such individuals only understand the language of the physical form, the formless Truth must manifest in a human form to assist them. As a person advances and their identification with the body decreases, the need for a physical Guru also diminishes, and they may find guidance through scriptures or everyday events. Addressing the difficulty of breaking habits, Acharya Prashant notes that the mind often resists peace because it finds pleasure in its own noise. He suggests that since the mind will always choose the wrong option when given a choice, one must place themselves in environments where the reins of control are taken away. Habits maintain their hold by lying to the individual, claiming they are beneficial and that their absence would lead to disaster. By placing oneself in a setting where a habit is temporarily broken, one realizes that no harm occurs in its absence. This realization exposes the habit's lies and allows the individual to experience a different, more authentic joy.
